I understand his rage. I am not quite that angry and I have not been the target of absurd lawfare and false and lurid accusations about being a Russian agent. But you need to hold your tongue. Even I need to do so at times. As part of a Christmas greeting this is especially sad.
Trump has no concept of dignity. One can be dignified and combative. Winston Churchill pulled no punches, but he was never childish. Senator Charles Sumner's 1857 speech "The Crime Against Kansas" was a masterpiece of excoriation (it provoked his target's nephew to assault Sumner in the Senate chamber), without any petty name calling.
ReplyDeleteTrump has mobilized some conservatives with his energy. But his style is a terrible handicap. Ted Cruz or Scott Walker would have wiped the floor with Clinton in 2016, or probably any Democrat in 2020.
If the true history of this period is ever written (though that's unlikely if the Left wins), Trump will be held responsible for much of what went wrong.
I wish I believed Cruz could have done it. I respect Cruz, but Trump with all his nastiness woke up a lot of people who had given up.
DeleteScott Walker staked out a remarkably bold and popular restrictionist position on immigration, and he was doing well in the polls. Then a billionaire donor publicly scolded him and Walker reversed course, and his poll numbers collapsed. That kind of cowardly, obsequious deference to the donor class is precisely what drove millions of voters away from GOPe candidates and propelled Trump ahead of the field.

I have all kinds of objections to Trump as a person, but if his boorish lack of decorum upsets you that much, then I think, with all due respect, that you aren't particularly serious about the dire state of the country. Trump didn't cause the system to break down. He revealed (or provoked the establishment into revealing) that it was already catastrophically broken.
I am disappointed that Trump is letting his justifiable anger overwhelm any notion of decorum. Whether good or not, that rage does not make him more attractive as a candidate. He is clearly the best choice. Just the rage he creates in the Beltway is enough reason.
