"Act like men": throughout human history and likely before, a man's primary biological function was to protect his offspring and generally those of his kin in the family bands that were typical.   The worst aspects of masculinity: aggression, violence, proprietary interest in mate's, are all expressions of this biological necessity.  A male who fails in his biological function may be many things but a man he is not
