It Sounded and Looked Like a Rattlesnake

I was surprised that two shots with a .22 did not cause immediate death.  My wife made a pretty decent center of mass hit (as best that can be measured on something they is profoundly not rectangular) and another near the tail.  Yet even a few minutes later it was still wiggling and hissing.

The girls were just barking madly at it while it hissed and rattled.  Oddly, no one called the police.  California this is not.

It looks like a bull snake but they make a simulation of a rattle to scare off predators.
