One occasional restraining influence of medieval warfare in Europe was that it was best not to destroy villages because ideally if you are successful you will become the new master of these peasants.
Russian destruction of residential buildings and factories tells me that Putin has no interest in the population of Russian- occupied Ukrainians. The cost of rebuilding will be enormous.
