I Have Made This Point Before

The Government Model that you are not carrying because of weight or bulk is less effective than the mouse gun that you actually have with you.  Remember: your goal is to make the bad guy ask himself: Do I want to bleed to death in five hours, explain to a police officer in an ER why I have a gunshot wound, or look for an easier target?  A mass murderer is a situation where the .45 or even the 9mm JHP matters a lot more; he is probably planning suicide anyway.  But mass murder is pretty darn rare.

If you draw a gun, plan to use it.  But if you draw on someone who intends you great bodily harm, I suspect most will suddenly remember an appointment elsewhere.

  1. I plan to Stop the THreat. A ,25 doesn't do that, generally. a 9mm does it better. a .45 moreso.

I was trained that the firearm stays holstered until just beofe use. It isn't a device to threaten with. If the situation is such that it needs to be unholstered, then it needs to be used immediately.

    1. If you draw, few bad guys are going tom wait around to be shot, even with a mouse gun.

  2. The relative of a friend of mine was dismissive of the effectiveness of a .22 pistol when my friend told of investigating a noise that seemed serious enough to not ignore and go back to sleep. He was wrong. Nobody wants to be shot, even by a lowly .22,

  3. What people tend to overlook is the simple fact that if you present a weapon and don't immediately use it, those threatening you will assume you will never use it. It's normally an empty threat, and human nature tells them to continue, if for no other reason than avoiding a loss of face. There are other psychological reasons that can also drive them to dismiss you.

No warning shots, either! Almost never legal, and the same mental process applies.

    1. The evidence that they consider it an empty threat? See https://gunselfdefense.blogspot.com/2021/03/atlanta-ga.html and https://gunselfdefense.blogspot.com/2019/12/oswego-il.html among others.

    2. Agreed about warning shots. I suspect few criminals are going to look at the pistol in your hand and say, "Is that a .22, a .380, or a .45? I better get out of here. He might be a crack shot or very lucky who gets me in the head.

  4. Decent .380 cal pistols are available in packages as small as that Beretta.

  5. That's why several companies make lightweight Government Models. Problem solved.
