Renquist, later Chief Justice, was so wrong in so many ways on this one. It is not a burden on the Texas Corrections System to provide Buddhist religious materials. They already provide at least two different versions of the bible at a rate of one per inmate. They already have a chapel and the Buddhist prisoner was not asking for a new one, just access to the existing one. Finally the prison awarded points for religious attendance which could lead to better prison jobs and even earlier parole. As a last item, the government cannot question one’s faith or the strength thereof.
