What are they smoking besides forests?

 8/30/20 San Francisco Chronicle:

Newsom now has a month to decide whether to sign AB2847, which would would require that semiautomatic pistols sold in the state leave a single unique imprint on bullets that are fired rather than two, as currently required. The marking, which reveals a gun’s make, model and serial number, are meant to help law enforcement investigations.

I guess revolvers are not a problem.

“This is a bill that will assist law enforcement in solving gun-related crimes via microstamping technology and reduce the number of accidental gun deaths and injuries,” Chiu said Sunday on the Assembly floor. The measure passed on a 43-13 vote.

Accidental deaths? This refers to the other requirements for inclusion on Handgun Roster. More interesting and worrisome:
The Department of Justice shall, for each semiautomatic pistol newly added to the roster pursuant to Section 32015, remove from the roster exactly three semiautomatic pistols lacking one or more of the applicable features described in paragraphs (4), (5), and (6) of subdivision (b) and added to the roster before July 1, 2022.

This means that any new model added to the "safe" handguns list forces three older guns off the list.

Portland Shooter Identified By His Family?

False Positives

 8/29/20 New York Times:

Some of the nation’s leading public health experts are raising a new concern in the endless debate over coronavirus testing in the United States: The standard tests are diagnosing huge numbers of people who may be carrying relatively insignificant amounts of the virus.

Most of these people are not likely to be contagious, and identifying them may contribute to bottlenecks that prevent those who are contagious from being found in time. But researchers say the solution is not to test less, or to skip testing people without symptoms, as recently suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Instead, new data underscore the need for more widespread use of rapid tests, even if they are less sensitive.

“The decision not to test asymptomatic people is just really backward,” said Dr. Michael Mina, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, referring to the C.D.C. recommendation.

“In fact, we should be ramping up testing of all different people,” he said, “but we have to do it through whole different mechanisms.”

In Defense of Looting

8/27/20 NPR interviews author of the new book In Defense of Looting.  The author is very clear that only mob action is defensible.

When I use the word looting, I mean the mass expropriation of property, mass shoplifting during a moment of upheaval or riot. That's the thing I'm defending. I'm not defending any situation in which property is stolen by force. It's not a home invasion, either. It's about a certain kind of action that's taken during protests and riots.

It is an important distinction.  Breaking into her home and stealing her 84" big screen TV is not okay. And she claims looting is a fundamental part of BLM.

I look forward to NPR interviewing the author of In Defense of Lynching and In Defense of Cross-Burning.  Not.  She is pretty clearly gender confused or just plain ugly.  Is anyone surprised?

That crazy leftists are defending rioting is no surprise.  That our tax dollars are being spent to promote sales of this book is horrifying.

Office 2016

Has anyone used this?  When my employer offered us the $10 educational discount version, I decided to stay with Office 2013, because at first glance, it looked like all your documents would be stored online.  Did I misjudge this?  I ask because the Outlook 2013 application no longer seems to work with my employer's mail server and tech support has no idea how to fix it, except perhaps a complete reinstall of Office 2013.  I would like to think that any macros, etc. in Word and Excel would survive reinstall, but who knows?

The Kenosha Shooting

First of all, crossing a state line when you think there might be deadly force involved is best left to professional rioters.

Secondly, defending your own property from rioters is also far easier to sell to a jury than randomly showing up far from home.

Nonetheless, the criminal complaint against Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old who shot several "mostly peaceful" rioters in Kenosha provides pretty strong evidence of lawful self-defense, once he put his mouth into the lion's mouth.

The criminal complaint relies on a statement from a journalist for the Daily Caller that the first dead rioter confronted Rittenhouse, throwing stuff at him, then tried to wrestle the rifle away from Rittenhouse, at which point he shot thug and accidentally shot the reporter.

Subsequent shots were fired as the mob chased and surrounded Rittenhouse. The second rioter had a skateboard in his hands while attempting to disarm Rittenhouse.  (It's time for skateboard control!) The third rioter shot had a handgun in his hand at the time.

This seems like an easy self-defense claim, but Kenosha is a public university town.  I suspect therefore that "being armed while Republican" is a capital crime.

8/27/20 New York Daily News tells us more about the victims:

Online arrest records show Huber was arrested several times on battery, drugs and other charges. Rosenbaum had an open criminal case on battery, disorderly conduct and domestic abuse charges, according to the Wisconsin Circuit Court website. His previous record could not immediately be confirmed.

Captain's Journal has a screen capture of Rosenbaum's sex offender registry page.  Try and find that on lamestream news.  Interesting, he was in Kenosha for his job as a lifeguard.

When the Klan Did (And Rarely Still Does) Burn a Cross on Someone's Lawn

It was a form of terrorism.  Move out or else!  (If you were a Unitarian, the joke went "They burn a question mark.")  But what does this say about the Democratic Party's commitment to respectful disagreement?  8/28/20 Newsweek:

The clip, shared on Twitter by a reporter for conservative-leaning outlet the Daily Caller, shows a life-sized Trump doll with its head through a guillotine. Protestors dressed the doll up to wear a prisoner's jumpsuit, a straightjacket and the sort of mouth-covering mask made famous by the character Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. The Daily Caller reporter said that there was a piece of paper on the presidential effigy that read "Fascist, Rapist, Criminal."

Oh, that's right, the Klan was the Democratic Party.  A burning cross was not a direct threat, unlike this.  As many others have pointed out, if Trump was a fascist, these clever people would already have joined the "disappeared."

Will the Democrats Just Admit Their Goals?

 8/27/20 LifeZette:

The riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin escalated once again last night, with rioters using Sunday’s police-involved shooting of Jacob Blake as an excuse to wreak havoc on the city. After days of burning and looting businesses and disrupting the lives of locals, on Wednesday night the rioters shifted their focus to targeting places of worship.

Protesters spray-painted “Free Palestine” at a Jewish synagogue and “BLM” on a Christian church sign. Townhall‘s Julio Rosas captured video footage of someone spray-painting “Free Palestine” in the driveway of Kenosha’s Beth Hillel Temple.

President Biden's handlers are doubtless already calculating the number of cattle cars required.

Conspiracy to Riot?

 8/27/20 Seattle Times:

Eight volunteers from Seattle-based Riot Kitchen were ordered out of their vehicles and arrested by law enforcement officials soon after their Wednesday arrival in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where they had planned to provide free food to protesters, according to a board member of the nonprofit group.

A video posted on Twitter purports to show some of what happened during the daylight arrests. The officers arrive in what appear to be unmarked vehicles, and surround a minivan that had just fueled up at a Kenosha gas station and was carrying what board member Jennifer Scheurle said was a group of Riot Kitchen volunteers....

“We are a nonprofit and our mission is to feed people for free — protesters and everyone in need,” said Scheurle. “We were from out of town — but that’s not illegal.”

And that's why you are called Riot Kitchen, not Feeding the Hungry?

Police say that they made nine arrests for disorderly conduct from three vehicles that included the school bus, the minivan and a bread truck. They say they observed the occupants of the bus and bread truck exit to fill multiple fuel cans.

Scheurle said that any cans filled with fuel would have been for legitimate uses, such as generators used in serving meals.

Of course.  People who call themselves Riot Kitchen would have no other purpose for this.  "Honestly, officer,  I was buying empty whiskey bottles and gasoline to make some wicked mixed drinks."

How to Make Enemies and Not Influence People

The Hill has video of the BLM crowd surrounding patrons at an outdoor restaurant demanding proof of solidarity.  This being Washington, most put their fists in the air to make the scene go away, but one refused:

When the woman refused, she was surrounded by a number of protesters with their fists raised in the air who screamed and berated her for not doing so.

“I felt I was under attack,” the woman told Washington Post reporter Fredrick Kunkle, adding that she had been marching with protesters for several weeks and was “very much with them,” but didn’t feel right about being coerced by the group to display her support.

Looking at the video, I can see why most people submitted cowered; when this many angry people surround you this close, the fear of violence is very strong.  Even a gun is not useful at this point because the rest of the pack will beat you to death.  I do think a few of these thugs getting shot might get the message through.

In the meantime, these incidents are likely increasing visits to neo-Nazi websites by people who might otherwise have found their message absurd.  Keep at it BLM; you can give Trump a huge victory, and create thousands of new skinheads.

Discouraging Help Wanted Sign

At the local supermarket.  Not easy to read (I will get closer next time).  Yes, next to last line says, "Must know how to use shovel": apparently that requires some advanced training these days.  There's no video game where you dig the Panama Canal by yourself while avoiding mosquitoes and venomous snakes?

cui bono?

This morning,  I was having mischievous thoughts.   Instead of assuming that George Soros is funding this disruption of BLM and nightly rioting,  can you think of anyone more benefiting from this than white supremacists? If you wanted to create a perception that blacks are too dangerous to have in your town, what would you do?  The problem with this hypothesis is that there is not enough money in their hands to do this.

Communists might be pushing this not just for their fantasy of proletariat revolution,  but by seeing back race relations 50 years they could again lure thugs like the Black Panthers back into their movement -- and this time, it will work.  This explains the white trust fund babies (who hates capitalism more than the spoiled brats who do not need to work?), media support and a newly leftwing Democratic Party.

Fight back.  Reject prejudice from anyone who seems to be on your side at demonstrations.

Low-dose Hydroxychloroquine Therapy and Mortality in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: A Nationwide Observational Study of 8075 Participants...

Methods

We conducted a retrospective analysis of in-hospital mortality in the Belgian national COVID-19 hospital surveillance data. Patients treated either with HCQ alone and supportive care (HCQ group) were compared to patients treated with supportive care only (no-HCQ group) using a competing risks proportional hazards regression with discharge alive as competing risk, adjusted for demographic and clinical features with robust standard errors.

Results

Of 8075 patients with complete discharge data on 24th of May and diagnosed before the 1st of May, 4542 received HCQ in monotherapy and 3533 were in the no-HCQ group. Death was reported in 804/4542 (17.7%) and 957/3533 (27.1%), respectively. In the multivariable analysis, the mortality was lower in the HCQ group compared to the no-HCQ group (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.684, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.617–0.758). Compared to the no-HCQ group, mortality in the HCQ group was reduced both in patients diagnosed ≤ 5 days (n=3975) and > 5 days (n=3487) after symptom onset (adjusted HR 0.701, 95% CI 0.617–0.796 and adjusted HR 0.647, 95% CI 0.525–0.797, respectively).

BLM at Eagle City Council Meeting Tonight

It sounds like am ugly confrontation is the goal.   Remain calm, and let them draw first blood.

Certainty of this event is low.   Apparently a rumor only.

More Lynching Surprises

The popular conception of a Southern lynching is a black man accused of raping a white woman is dragged from the jail by enraged white men and hung.  (I suspect To Kill A Mockingbird created this stereotype.)

As I have previously mentioned, I have found black lynch mobs killing black men.  Yesterday's surprise.  White lynch mob kills black men accused of murdering a black man:

I do not claim these incidents are typical; I am hunting for mass murders and these are what I find.  Still different than I expect.

Tiny End Mills

I always wondered  for purpose what these skinny, fragile-looking end mills exist.  I figured it out.  I want to cut a square slot for a telescope ring.  You really cannot cut a square bottom slot that is square in the corners with a large end mill.  But I am using a .125" end mill to cut a .22" deep, 1.6" wide slot.  It is not really square in the corners, but close enough.

A Very Important Endorsement

8/24/20 PJMedia reports that the organizer of the Charlottesville tiki torch parade has endorsed... Joe Biden.

I plan to vote for Biden and a straight democratic ticket. It’s not based on “accelerationism” or anything like that; the liberals are clearly more competent people.

White supremacists are clearly not very bright. Endorsing Slow Joe makes perfect sense.

Is There Something About A at the Start of Your Name? (Antifa, Ammon)

 7/31/20 Yahoo News:

Ammon Bundy, an anti-government activist who lead the 41-day armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge back in 2016, expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement and for defunding the police in a recent Facebook video.

He said in the video that he had considered attending, near his home in Boise, Idaho, “a rally with the Black Lives Matter in support of defunding the police because yes the police need to be defunded.” He decided not to attend the rally, citing concerns about potential violence from fellow “Patriots” who have criticized his stance on the issue.

How This Does Not Lead to Civil War, I Do Not Know

Videos of Antifa attacking Back the Blue demonstration.  I would think the prospect of being seriously injured would discourage this sort of street brawling.  But Antifa needs its own Horst Wessel, and if they can't get him murdered, they can at least get one of their number killed so he can be a "martyr."  Or Antifa may just be crazy beyond tenure.

Rioting is Contraindicated

 8/24/20 Gallup:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As the Republican convention gets underway, recent Gallup polling finds the GOP still trailing Democrats in U.S. adults' party affiliation but not nearly to the degree it did in June. The Democratic advantage over the Republican Party, which was an unusually large 11-percentage-points in June, is now six points. Though smaller, the current gap remains larger than it was in any of the first five months of the year.

Democrat registration has exceeded Republican registration as long as I can remember.  But Republicans still win the Presidency and control of Congress for several reasons:

1. Republicans turn out to vote, not riot.

2. Much of Democratic registration is cultural.  If your family has been registering Democrat since they arrived at Ellis Island or since Dr. King's assassination, it is a hard change.  If you have lived in the same rent-controlled apartment for decades, your registration is unlikely to have changed.

3. Get out the vote drives are less successful in cemeteries than you might expect.

4. A surprising number of Democrats cross party lines.  The "Reagan Democrats" voted for him for the same reason many voted for Trump: constantly being told that your race makes you an oppressor is not a way to make people like; many Democrats are sufficiently socially conservative that gay marriage and transgender bathrooms generate distaste, not support; "gun control" means proper aim; abortion remains a negative, even among Americans who call themselves "pro-choice."

More Bad News (for Democrats)

 8/20/20 UPI:

Aug. 20 (UPI) -- For the fifth day in a row, new COVID-19 cases in the United States are under 50,000 -- a streak that hasn't been seen since before a dramatic spike in cases began in early July.

New data Thursday from Johns Hopkins University showed 46,400 new cases on Wednesday, a slight increase over the day before. Nationally, there have been fewer than 50,000 new cases in nine of the last 11 days, continuing a gradual decline since a single-day spike of 77,000 in mid-July.

Deaths increased, but unsurprising with the number new infections in the past.

I Guess COVID-19 Really Is Not That Serious...

8/22/20 New York Post reports entertainers are getting a special exemption from the 14 day quarantine for the Video Music Awards.  But 8/20/20 Syracuse.com:

There is no dancing allowed in New York’s bars and restaurants, even at a wedding reception, according to the New York State Liquor Authority.

To control the spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s liquor authority has also specifically banned darts, pool, cornhole, karaoke and exotic dancing.

Somehow, a place that allows customers to throw axes and drink beer is reopening Friday. There was no word from the liquor authority on how that fits in to safety protocols.

No kidding. Cuomo has also banned comedy shows.

Okay, learn to sing "Footloose" with a mob accent.

Washington Post Article About Voter Fraud

8/22/20 Washington Post has a long and interesting article about a largescale attempt to throw the 1864 election to the Democratic candidate George McClellan by mail-in voter fraud.  Reading the comments by WP readers is a riot.  They attempt to shift blame for this to conservatives, and seem unaware that McClellan was a Democrat.  They also portray Trump as a tyrant for being concerned about voter fraud.  The level of self-delusion never ceases to amaze me.

Remember: Concern About Mail-In Voter Fraud is a Right-Wing Talking Point

 See 8/19/20 New York Times:

In the days before New Jersey’s third-largest city held municipal elections in May entirely by mail, postal workers became suspicious when they found hundreds of ballots bundled together.

The discovery triggered an investigation that led to charges of voter fraud against two local elected leaders and resulted in nearly 20 percent of the ballots being rejected. It also prompted President Trump to cite the case as an example of how mail-in voting can corrupt elections, though election experts staunchly disagree.

On Wednesday, a New Jersey judge ruled that the election in Paterson, N.J., had been irreversibly tainted and ordered a new vote to be held in November to settle the race for the City Council seat.

Hundreds of ballots bundled together.   Imagine if New Jersey Democrats were smart

If Ammon Bundy Were Suspected the Screaming Would Be Loud

 8/21/20 Portland Oregonian:

All federal buildings in Portland, including the Federal Bankruptcy Court and Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse downtown, closed Friday amid a threat now under investigation by the FBI.

The Bankruptcy Court cited a “threat of violence in the area” as the reason for its shutdown.

A source with knowledge of the situation said federal authorities received a threat that a vehicle filled with explosives would hit a federal building. It’s not clear if a specific building was named.

The Portland Protests Are Expanding

Video of what is almost entirely a white crowd using spotlights and loudspeakers screaming "Wake up[obscenities]" at suburban homes.  Some of the newly "woke" may well vote Republican after this sort of infantile progressive behavior.  This does not seem a sign of believing that they have widespread support, waking up potential allies who may have real jobs in the morning.

Idaho COVID Data

Idaho Dept. of Public Health shows date of onset of new cases:

Blue are confirmed cases.  Of course, if 100 people were infected this last week, we would not know about these cases yet.  Still these cases are headed down.  This suggests that the number of new infections is falling fast.  And look at the slope of the curve.

More Evidence That This Panic Is Not Public Health Driven

 8/17/20 Colorado Sun:

When the new coronavirus first swept through Colorado earlier this year, baffling doctors with its myriad of symptoms and methods of spread, Dr. Brian Stauffer, the head of cardiology at Denver Health, soon began to notice a different kind of pandemic mystery.

People, it seemed, had stopped having heart attacks.

At Denver Health and other large hospitals across the metro area, the number of people showing up with cardiac emergencies dropped significantly as the state imposed increasingly strict measures encouraging people to stay at home to slow the virus’ spread. And this was not unique to Colorado — hospitals across the country and in Europe documented the same phenomenon. Had stay-at-home orders somehow also slowed heart attacks or were people in need of medical help simply not seeking it for fear of COVID-19?

new study from Stauffer and several Denver Health colleagues offers the first clue to the answer in Colorado. Looking at data on ambulance calls in Denver, they found that, while overall calls for service went down during the stay-at-home period, the number of people dying from cardiac arrests at home shot up.

Stauffer’s team found that cardiac arrests at home in Denver more than doubled in the two weeks after the statewide stay-at-home order was issued compared with historical averages. Even compared with more recent data, the weekly average of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests jumped to 46 during those two weeks, versus 26 or 27 in the three months prior....

Stauffer said it is possible that some of the cardiac arrests during the stay-at-home period were the direct result of coronavirus infection. Few of the deaths resulted in autopsies, he said, and testing for the virus at the time was still quite limited — so it’s possible some were undiagnosed COVID-19 cases.

But he doesn’t think that’s the predominant explanation. Instead, he said it’s more likely that people who were having heart attacks tried to brush them off to avoid going to the hospital. Without treatment, that would lead to damage in their hearts that would cause a cardiac arrest.

“People tend to downplay things under normal circumstances and then, when they’re afraid to go to the hospital, they tend to downplay them even more,” Stauffer said.

It appears that heart attack deaths rose, driving up total deaths.  This is no surprise.  Heart attacks (technically myocardial infarcts) are often ignored until too late.  Men try to tough it out and ignore pain and other symptoms; women have different symptoms and also often ignore the signs.

So much evidence suggests the seriousness of COVID-19 (which is actually a serious problem by itself) relative to other public problems has been exaggerated for political purposes.  Social and broadcast media have no shortage of control freaks and the easily terrified to manipulate.

I wonder how many died of heart attacks compared to COVID-19 deaths?

Some of the panicmongers are saying that of course cardiac deaths rose at home during the lockdown: more people were at home to have heart attacks.  But most people are home about 16 hours a day.  During lockdown that goes up 50% to 24 hours a day.  Even then, if you are having serious symptoms absent a COVID panic, most will very likely go to the ER at some point.  (In many cases, too late, of course, but those would show up as hospital deaths.)

Hand This Off to Your Gun Control Friends And Watch The Smoke From Their Ears

 8/18/20 Shooting Illustrated:

Pennsylvania County Offers Drive-Thru Carry Permits

The headline overstates it a bit; they arranged drive-up processing by appointment.

A surge of concealed carry permit applications at the Alleghany County (PA) Sheriff’s office has created a backlog the department won’t be able to clear until November, according to KDKA 2, a Pittsburgh-based CBS TV affiliate. “People [are] afraid of what’s going on in the country. The unlawfulness. The violent protests. They’re just really worked up about that,” Sheriff William Mullen told the reporter.

The department’s efforts to address the backlog included a drive-thru license-to-carry event on July 25, which was also featured by the station. Due to social distancing protocols, though, the 7-hour program could only handle 80 applicants. Appointments to take advantage of the outreach program needed to be made at least five days in advance and no unscheduled traffic was allowed.

The Democratic Party's efforts to terrify white Americans into paying slavery reparations (carefully filtered through a largely white bueaucracy) is making a lot of new gun owners and gun carriers.  How many will let their racial guilt force them to vote for Biden, who thinks guns should be limited to one round.

How Bad is Portland?

The left is starting to screech that the riots in Portland are confined to just a few blocks; it is really not that bad.  7/31/20 New York Times promotes this narrative:

The clashes with federal officers were largely confined to a two-block stretch of downtown Portland. The mood tended to follow a predictable pattern, with large, peaceful gatherings in the evening turning to chaos later at night.

The problems these riots are causing are not limited to downtown.  8/2/20 Fox News:

A shooting rang out about 11:08 p.m. Friday outside an apartment building near the 600 Block of NE 87th Avenue. The Portland Police Bureau said in an update Saturday that more than 150 rounds were fired and bullets struck at least eight occupied apartments and seven vehicles. One round struck a woman in the arm, and responding officers applied a tourniquet before she was transported to the hospital by ambulance with injuries that were not life-threatening.

“This is America and it’s a war zone with 150 shots in an apartment complex close to a Christian university. How can we explain that?” Aragon Marks, who lives at the building, told Fox 12 Oregon.

Though it was not immediately clear whether the shooting was linked to demonstrations seen in Portland nearly every night since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the end of May, another resident, Kemoh Sulimani, connected the violence to the city’s efforts to defund police.

“They had a gang violence task force that are no longer funded, which is unfortunate because as soon as that defunding happened all of this really peaked up,” Sulimani told Fox 12.

Remember that the goal of BLM is abolition of police departments, at which point gangs take over black neighborhoods, killing far more blacks than police ever would and no national news coverage.  (I am guessing that Kemoh Sulimani is not a white supremacist.)

Nice photo in that article of the anarchist graffiti on a wall.  As usually, these people have not a clue what anarchy means.  It means shopkeepers buying belt-fed machine guns and mowing down these mobs.  Without a government to regulate machine gun sales or a government to prosecute shopkeepers anarchy turns into a blood bath of progressives.

As I posted a few days ago, their compatriots in Seattle are already demanding that whites move out of black neighborhoods and give up their homes.  There was a time when this happened with whites threatening blacks into leaving "white" towns.

Making excuses for racism just increases the risk that some of these black racists will start pulling a modern version of the 1921 Tulsa race riots.  This will end badly, probably worst for blacks who know better than to engage in this race hatred; when {white, Korean-American, East Indian, Jewish} people are being victimized in the name of social justice for blacks, the response of hotheads is unlikely to be selective as to who is the enemy.  There are no good endings to race hatred, regardless of the color of the rioters.

Pretty sure machine-generated Anerican speech informing me of a $990 purchase in my Amazon account and to call them back, if I did not authorize the purchase.   Of course, no such purchase on my account,  so not sure what the play was going to be.  Can I have your Amazon account ID and password?

As Much As I Miss the California Coast

Watching the state go up in flames reminds me why I am glad that I will nor be returning.

Along with enormous thunder strike activity,  record heat, and electricity shortages, are making things very hard on a population beset by high rates of COVID and Gov. Newsom.

And we seem to be getting the smoke as well in Idaho.  Another unwanted export,  although I am sure Californians would prefer to not be exporting

As Bad As It Is, It Could Be Much Worse

I read Nevil Shute's On the Beach, and watched the 1959 movie of it starring Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck.  While hunting for it on YouTube, I found this 2000 version made Down Under, which is completely logical because most of it is set Down Under.  I think I like the 2000 version better.

The book is definitely in the "Better Red Than Dead" category, intended to scare the West into abandoning nuclear deterrence by postulating an intentional use of cobalt-60 salted weapons of a sort that no nation ever built, or would have ever built.  The goal was to imagine a world slowly dying of radioactive fallout, where there is no escape.

The 2000 version fails to explain this terrifying apocalyptic requirement (and I do not recall the 1959 version explaining this nearly impossible cause).  On the plus side, the American captaining the Los Angeles-class SSBN is portrayed as a profoundly decent person who does not carry out his doomsday orders when it becomes apparent that China is prepared to destroy the world, instead of losing face by withdrawing from Taiwan.

What made the book, and both movies so depressing is the lack of any spiritual awareness of anyone.  Both movies have a Salvation Army band playing under the banner, "There is still time."  But unlike most Americans and even many Aussies, no one in the book or movies faces their own mortality with any sort of hope or faith for beyond.  And trust me, as my clock ticks down, that is the one thing that you can count on: people seek meaning beyond.

There is A Stereotype of Lynch Mobs As Expressions of Sudden Rage

But along with other cases where the mob tore up the railroad tracks to prevent outside reinforcements for the sheriff, we have examples like this.

Shelbyville, Ky. (1911)

Before 01/17/1911: A very well-organized lynch mob shut down the town’s electric power, cut the jail’s phone lines, then went to the jail masked, armed, and carrying sledge hammers and picks with which to force open the jail doors.  The mob took away three blacks out of 17 prisoners; shot to death one, hung another, bound and threw the third one into Clay Creek (assumed drowned).

Category: public

Suicide: no

Cause: lynch

Weapon: firearm, hung, drown[1]
