I have toyed with the idea of replacing the 1TB drive in my Lenovo with a SSD drive. At these prices, it is mostly the hassle that stops me.
WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB PC SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm - WDS100T2B0A $115. I do not need more room, but more speed is attractive, especially running linuxCNC in a VM. Remember when hard discs were so expensive that you often found yourself backing up non-current stuff to tape? Or am I dating myself? (Don't need Match.com for that! On Tinder, do you just keep swiping right -- or is it left -- hoping for someone more attractive than yourself?)
I updated my 2012 MacBook Pro with a SSD last year, a fantastic improvement. Worth every cent of the $200 or so. I had planned to buy a new laptop for $1800 so I saved $1600! Booting the Xcode simulator (a similar task to running a VM) went from 12 minutes to 17 seconds!!!
ReplyDeleteI used the free version of SuperDuper to clone the old drive.
And do your eyes a favor: forget the 22” monitor, get a 27”. I loved the 27” that I bought as a 2nd monitor so much that I gave the 22” away and bought another 27”.
Don't know anything about laptops, except I had an old one that ran fine until I let it upgrade itself to Win10; then it wanted me to login, but since I'd never ever had a login on that old thing I couldn't. So reformatted it & put back Win7, then found out that I'd lost all the drivers which HP didn't want to help me with. So now it's perfectly working hardware that is totally unusable. That's Windows & HP for ya!
ReplyDeleteOn SDDs, though- I thought my PC was fast; it had i7 processor with 16GB RAM & a 7200rpm HDD. Eventually the HDD started making noise, so I got a 256GB SDD & replaced it. It was like unleasing a rocket! It blew me away! Now they're so cheap, relatively, if I was upgrading any computer I'd put in an SSD. It's the most boost for the buck I know of!
I have SSD drives in my laptops...either as the only drive, or as a boot drive replacing the CD drive.
ReplyDeleteAnd 2TB SSDs have decreased in price by about 50% in the last year....down around $220 now..
Other than the hassle of swapping the drive physically, most SSD drives come with some kind of software to clone the C: drive that has worked great for me on the Crucial and Samsung drives.
ReplyDeleteIt's totally worth upgrading to an SSD. In a lot of laptops it's not too hard, either--unscrew 2-4 screws to remove an access panel, and then a few more to release the drive.
ReplyDeleteI changed from a hard drive to SSD and love it. The OS loads so fast it still amazes me. Saves are very fast.
