Trying to Find Mass Murders in Old Newspapers is Slow
In 1870 and 1871, most uses of the word "murders" refer to Klan activity in general and almost never specific incidents. In 1872 and later, we start getting serial killers, one a family with a trap door in their grocery store, where they would beat the captives to death with a hammer described as something you would use for breaking up stones.
