Printed Atlases Still Have Their Uses
The New York herald., December 26, 1863, Page 8 describes a massacre of miners on the Missouri River as "350 miles north of Salt Lake City and 350 northeast of Walla Walla." Those two directions lead somewhere too north to be on the Missouri, but I am trusting river plus direction from Salt Lake City to be in Montana Territory. Try to do that online!
