"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." -- Rom. 8:28
There is a progression that occurs by thinking incorrectly (rejecting) about what God has revealed about Himself.
Paul's written catechetical that is the Letter to the Romans explains the progression in sequential detail:
...men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them...
So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened...
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie...
For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another...
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind...
The above term "debased" is the Greek word "adokimos", which in its essence is something that does not work correctly, or is found disqualified when tested (like a counterfeit coin). Their minds no longer work correctly.
The progression goes from suppressing the truth in direct opposition to what God has revealed to all men, and leads to an inability to think in a morally sound fashion because of the noetic effects of sin.
