I Used to Be Able to Do This, Several Versions of Word Ago

I am inserting index entries in the book.  This puts the field codes in the display.  gunsmiths{XE "gunsmith"}  How do I make those field codes disappear?  Alt-F9 should, but doesn't.  File, Options, Advanced should have a checkbox for this, but doesn't.
