Going Venezulan

Instapundit's USA Today column points to a positively Allende or Chavez-like attempt to suppress dissent:
Federal law  makes it a felony “for two or more persons to agree together to injure, threaten, or intimidate a person in any state, territory or district in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him/her by the Constitution or the laws of the Unites States, (or because of his/her having exercised the same).”

I wonder if U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude Walker, or California Attorney General Kamala Harris, or New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman have read this federal statute. Because what they’re doing looks like a concerted scheme to restrict the First Amendment free speech rights of people they don’t agree with. They should look up 18 U.S.C. Sec. 241, I am sure they each have it somewhere in their offices.

Here’s what’s happened so far. First, Schneiderman and reportedly Harris sought to investigate Exxon in part for making donations to groups and funding research by individuals who think “climate change” is either a hoax, or not a problem to the extent that people like Harris and Schneiderman say it is.
Gee, when is Exxon going to start funding my historically-based skepticism about global warming?  In my Western Civ class, I show a History Channel documentary about the Little Ice Age, and you can see the kids begin to wonder how much else they have been lied to about:

  1. IANAL, but it appears that the attorneys general in question have already committed the crime and are subject to the sanctions thereof, because my reading of 18 U.S.C. Sec. 241 indicates that the conspiring is the crime, not the actual act of restricting exercise of rights.

Not that I expect anyone in the Obama administration to pursue this, or even be aware of the violation. But....there will be a new administration in nine months, which may be shorter than the statute of limitations on this particular act of consipracy.

  2. The video was really interesting... till we get to the end where there is the talk about current "Climate Change" we're supposed to be experiencing. Now they're worrying that global warming will bring about a new Little Ice Age - or not. After talking for over an hour about how an ice age came about and then went away, there seems to be no idea sever climate change might just be fostered by one or a collection of inputs rather than how arrogant we might be to think we could be as powerful as the sum of reduced solar activity and increased volcanic activity. There also seems little curiosity as to what caused the Medieval Warm Period. I think before you blame what warming we're having now on us, I think it's incumbent on the Warmists to explain how the last warm period came about. For all we know, we're just going through that again.

Having said that, I found it very interesting! Thanks!
