Photosynthesis Causes Light? Who Knew?
NASA, apparently. April 3, 2014 Wiredhas a picture of North America glowing in a wavelength produced by photosynthesis.
A quick look suggests that the fluorescence marks excess capacity in the chlorophyll antenna system relative to available reaction centers. A visible photon carries a lot of energy, so it makes sense that if a given absorbed photon goes unused for reaction energy, that much of its energy is re-radiated rather than all going to thermal.
