The Harvard Extension School Cultural Studies Club said it will relocate its reenactment of a Satanic black mass ritual, scheduled for Monday night, to an off-campus site, citing in an email that “misinterpretations about the nature of the event were harming perceptions about Harvard and adversely impacting the student community.”Imagine if a Harvard club had put on a play about Mohammed as child molesting transsexual to understand the level of offense. Of course, you would have to imagine Harvard doing that -- because Harvard would be far, far too culturally sensitive to allow something like that.

Good News! Harvard Is Relocating The Satanic Mass Off Campus!
From the May 12, 2014 Harvard Crimson:
In a more ideal world, Harvard would hold the reenactment on campus. But they would also have the Mohammed mass. And they would have real Catholic mass.
ReplyDeleteAfter all, a university is supposed to be have free debate and expression. As we know, this is far from that ideal world, and getting worse all the time.
Would Harvard be less evil if it hosted the black mass but ousted the AAUW and the Modern Language Association?
ReplyDeleteModern and especially post-LaVeyan Black Masses are supposed to be a good deal more subdued than in your metaphor. The worst they do is mangle Latin and offer some rather bland blasphemies.
ReplyDeleteOf course, we've seen riots and assassinations over /that/ in Islamic contexts, too, so your point probably stands.
Ironically, only recommended it for particularly repressed Catholics: Harvard running the thing as a public show is very much missing the point.
