So what do you make of a law like this, passed March 30, 1779?
It is a Sabbath-keeping law, prohibiting work on the Sabbath, along with prohibiting "swearing, cursing, drunkeness [sic], cock fighting, bullet playing [?], horse racing, shooting matches and the playing or gaming for money or other vauable things, fighting of duels and such evil practices which tend greatly to debauch the minds and corrupt the morals of the subjects of this commonwealth..." Digging a bit deeper, the objection to horse racing, shooting matches, and other competitive events turns out to be the gambling aspects:
