Another Fake Hate Crime

From November 27, 2013 Daily Caller:
Reports of bias incidents at Vassar College that involved hateful messages left on students’ doors were actually elaborate hoaxes — and the perpetrator is none other than the student member of the Bias Incident Response Team, The Daily Caller has learned.

This fall semester at the liberal arts college in New York saw a curiously high number of bias incident reports. On Nov. 14, the college sent a mass email to students advising them that Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) had received at least six reports in the last few months of hateful and insensitive messages being scrawled and spray painted on student residences. Messages included “Avoid Being Bitches,” “Fuck Niggers,” and most prominently, “Hey Tranny. Know Your Place.”
Of course, one of the students was the transgendered Genesis Hernandez.  There are so many of these fake hate crimes, it makes you wonder what is wrong with people that feel the need to fake them.

  1. There is little reason to accept any of these stories as genuine. The hate crime industry is desperate for new material. Almost any will do.

  2. What's wrong is that people are convinced that racism / sexism / whatever is endemic in society, and therefore hate crimes like this must happen all the time. Then they take the argument to the next step, that if hate crimes aren't happening, then people might start to believe that racism / sexism / whatever might not be endemic. That would be completely unacceptable -- why, their job on the Bias Incident Report Team would be completely unnecessary if that were true! And so they go and create the hate crimes they know "should" be happening.

  3. I think we already knew something was wrong with these people.

Gender identity disorder is not a minor quirk.

  4. The murder of Horst Wessel served its purpose, and for the same reasons and for same kinds of people, fake hate crimes serve their purposes.

  5. So, should it be the Horst Wessel award for most egregious fake hate crime each year? I'm thinking a series of awards for news pieces, the Walter Duranty award, Baghdad Bob award, perhaps the Marinus Van Der Lubbe award, and now the Horst Wessel award.

  6. In terms of economic determinism, I see the same sort of phenomenon in northern Saskatchewan, where low-income folks in low-populated areas are volunteers in the local fire departments. They are only paid while fighting fires, so in times of economic downturn, the number of arson fires increases.
