Newest Law Review Article Out By Dave Kopel, Myself, and Joe Olson
Thank you for this article, I practice criminal defense law in New York City. New York State's knife carry laws are nearly as bad as their gun carry laws. State law expands the traditional definition of a "gravity knife" to include the vast majority of quality folding pocket knives.The statutory definition of a "gravity knife" is so vague and confusing that any pocket knife that can be flipped open with one hand is considered a prohibited weapon,
The arbitrary enforcement of the law by police and prosecutors results in frequent pre-textual arrests, particularly of out-of-state visitors who are unfamiliar with our draconian knife laws. The New York County DA recently indicted a major sporting goods store for selling high-end non-automatic knives that are legal everywhere else in the US but, in his judgment, New York State.
I am in the process of creating a detailed website on New York's knife laws to help people make informed judgments about carrying knives 8in New York State. It would be very helpful if the authors would grant permission for me to include a downloadable copy of the law review article on the website.

The preferred solution is to link to the copy at the Journal; that way any updates or corrections are still visible.
