"Hearing Voices"

From September 17, 2013 AP:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.
Yup.  I was right.

September 17, 2013 CNN has a long story about the AR-15 -- but starts out admitting that there was no AR-15 involved:
However, federal law enforcement sources told CNN Tuesday that authorities have recovered three weapons from the scene of the mass shooting, including one -- a shotgun -- that investigators believe Alexis brought in to the compound. The other two weapons, which sources say were handguns, may have been taken from guards at the Navy complex.

  1. So, what are the odds that he'd decided that Abby Sciuto was in love with him?

  3. Via Twitchy, the NY Daily News had a cover story yesterday titled "Same gun different slay" in huge font, with a picture of an AR-15 taking up a big hunk of the page. Now of course the FBI says no AR was used in the shooting. He may have picked one up off a victim, although that seems unlikely to me given the Clinton ban on weapons on base.

"Under the headline "Same Gun Different Slay," the Daily News used a photo of an AR-15 rifle and asserted that the "maniac" Alexis used the "Newtown weapon." An AR-15 was used by Adam Lanza in last year's mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. Daily News columnist Mike Lupica denounced the AR-15 as a weapon "made for murder" in Tuesday's issue."

He may have obtained an AR on the premises, but he didn't use one in the attacks, although the news stories say he rented one recently. That probably means he rented one at a range, not that you would be able to take that home with you like a DVD!

And of course now the FBI says he didn't use the AR during the shooting.

  5. Jonah Goldberg has a column on the mental health issue today. I am pleased to see that you managed to see it and weigh in on the issue, Mr. Cramer.

  6. Well, at some time in the recent past the murderer used an AR, so he was influenced by its evil nature to go out and kill.
And the linked article says that the AR was a popular weapon with mass murderers. This might have something to do with its overall popularity with the general shooting public, something like the way the Honda Accord is the most stolen car and the most popular car with owners.
But facts and analysis --and dare I say "nuance" -- get in the way of the non-politicization demigoguery of the tragedy the anti-liberty crowd are doing.
