Act of Valor

Just saw it.  I have a radio interview with a St. Louis station to do shortly.  Will post my details later.  Wow.  If Hollywood would make movies like this regularly, they would get me back in theaters more than once a year.

UPDATE: Positives:

  • Exciting to watch
  • Cinematography and production values are absolutely top-notch
  • Powerful voice-over preparing you for the end of the film--and there was not a sound in the theater when it ended with a list of Navy special operations personnel killed since 9/11
  • Realistic in its violence and language, and it is definitely not suitable for small children
  • The torture scenes are more implied than grossly graphic--still disturbing, but it could be worse
  • Heroes do great things, but heroes make mistakes, screw up, and die
  • The bad guys aren't cartoon figures; the Chechnyan leader's video is an accurate portrayal of their complaints and perceptions of the world

Negatives:

  • You can tell which of these actorsmake their living acting, and which are paid to defend us.  So what?   This is such a small problem that my first reaction is we should be glad that the SEALs aren't good enough actors to quit their day jobs.  I don't want Sylvester Stallone trying to do the jobs of the real heroes.  This is the only issue that I have with this film.

  1. Ain't it the truth? I had to endure a seemingly endless parade of previews before the main event. What complete and utter trash!

I am hoping Act of Valor makes lots and lots of money. Sadly this is the only measure of a movie that will get Hollywood's attention.

Otherwise, they'll continue to pander to the lowest common denominator.
