No Wonder Obama Wanted To Help The Libyan Rebels

It seemed odd that for once he was prepared to take action--while ignoring the Iranian dissidents a couple of years ago.  The March 25, 2011 Telegraph reports:

Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi, the Libyan rebel leader, has said jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq are on the front lines of the battle against Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

...

Even though the LIFG is not part of the al-Qaeda organisation, the United States military's West Point academy has said the two share an "increasingly co-operative relationship". In 2007, documents captured by allied forces from the town of Sinjar, showed LIFG members made up the second-largest cohort of foreign fighters in Iraq, after Saudi Arabia.
I know that you have to often make strange and ugly alliances in time of war, but it seems a bit much to be helping a group that describes al-Qaeada as "good Muslims."  Perhaps the Iranian dissidents did not have al-Qaeda endorsement.  That may have been the problem.

  1. Maybe we can identify some of these guys in the rebel ranks, and some of our bombs can fall short "accidentally". That being said, from the title of your post, can I assume that you believe that President Obama is an Al Qaeda supporter? Is this based on the fact that he's withdrawn troops from Afghanistan and stopped the drone attack program in Waziristan? Oh, wait, he hasn't done those things?

  2. Having stated an intended withdrawal date is definitely in al-Qaeda's interests. I don't think that it is so much that he is an al-Qaeda supporter as much as someone who regards the U.S. with contempt.

  3. I agree with your first statement, had President Obama done that. However, he only stated a date on which we would start to lower our troop numbers; there is no end date, as is appropriate.

  4. "prepared to take action"?

Obama wasn't prepared to do anything but talk. Until he was embarrassed by the French setting an example, he did nothing but fiddle.

It was pretty damn obvious that he didn't care who won - he's just jumping on a bandwagon.

BTW Gaddaffi has close relations with Iran, possibly including Iranian bases in Libya.

  5. Speaking of the French setting a warmaking example, the last time the U.S. followed up on such an example two Democrat presidents escalated the conflict enormously. This terribly dismayed the Left and blame was subsequently dumped on the Republicans. (Strange but true.)
