Curious News Story
I do not have time to read or research it.  (I was trying to ascertain how often the phrase "mass murder" appears in early American newspapers.  The answer is: "Often, where 'mass' is the abbreviation for Massachusetts.)  “Written Authority to Walk in Your Own Town,” . The Day Book [Chicago,Ill.], Feb. 5, 1912,  The photograph shows two men being asked for their pass by a guy in uniform at bayonet point.
